ENGLISH

La Rosa de los Vientos nature reserve and eco-hostel is nestled in the central Andes mountain range of Colombia, located at 1,700 meters above sea level. This unique nature reserve is found in the municipality of Salento, a quintessential town that forms part of the coffee and agricultural epicenter of Colombia. This region is home to the Valle de Cocora - where you can find the wax ... palm tree the national tree of Colombia, in all of its splendor- and the Bosque de Nubes (the Cloud Forest). It is within this unique habitat that La Rosa de los Vientos has offered accommodations to the eco-conscious traveler.
Eighteen years ago, Margarita Rosa Tirado-Mejia an artist and holistic therapist, purchased a small parcel of uncultivated land where a polluted stream ran through it. At first many questioned her sanity, yet eventually she managed to gather some support and began a regenerative process to restore this abandoned habitat.
Since then, this small parcel has grown into a forest. A variety of native trees, and plants –including 400 wax palm trees –were cultivated, and regenerated this once fallow land, and today 5 different species of rainforest frogs, 37 species of birds, and 7 types of small mammals can be found. Sightings of the gurre, mono aullador, jaguarundi, the sloth, and hedgehog have been noted.
The once lifeless stream has also seen the reappearance of various endemic small fish, Hemybricon Boquiae and the Hemybricon Quindiae-which had been reported missing since 1912. You can now see them swimming in the crystal clear water. This collective achievement has been recognized by the Colombian government, and today La Rosa de los Vientos forms part of the Colombian Civilian Association of Nature Reserves (which is protected by Law 99 of the 1993 Constitution).
Yet Margarita Rosa envisioned something more for this 3.5 hectare forest. She wanted to create a space where everyone could appreciate this micro cosmos in the most sustainable way possible. So she set out to construct a hostel made from recycled material. Again Margarita gathered help from the nearby community and in a short time two houses were constructed. Each house is reinforced with bamboo and wood, and offers colorful and multifaceted lodgings.

ACCOMMODATIONS/AMENITIES: La Rosa de los Vientos offers natural saunas, Turkish baths, hot showers, therapeutic massages, a gym, some internet available, bike rentals, camping sites by the stream and indoor lodgings, and two communal kitchens. Since La Rosa forms part of the Colombian Civilian Association of Nature Reserves, organized tours and guides to different regions in the country –where other nature reserves are found–can be arranged. If you´re interested in learning about the geography, and the flora and fauna of the region -or you have any other specific interest-we can arrange for you to meet with local experts.
